Is Quantum Computing the Death of Crypto?

Quantum computing is one of the biggest threats people mention when they talk about crypto. Crypto depends on cryptography, cryptography protects wallets, private keys, and transactions. When quantum computers will be strong enough they can break some of the systems of the blockchain. Google Research warned that future quantum computers could be a threat to the security of cryptocurrencies. But also they said that the sitution can be handled.

The biggest concern is wallet security. A powerful quantum computer can use public information to calculate a private key. Whoever has the private key controls the all the funds in the wallet. Inactive wallets are mostly at risk if their funds dont move to safer systems in time.

I do not think quantum computing means the death of crypto. The most likely scenario is that crypto will adapt and upgrade. This is happening as of now. In 2024, NIST released the first finalized post quantum encryption standards, which are designed to protect systems against future quantum attacks.   Ethereum also says post quantum preparation is part of its long term roadmap because cryptographic transitions take years to plan safely.

The difficult part will be the transition. Blockchains will need to add quantum resistant signatures, wallets will need updates, and users may need to move funds to safer addresses. This could cause fear in the market, especially if quantum computers improve faster than expected. Bitcoin may also be slower to change because upgrades need wide agreement from the community.

Quantum computing is most likely not the death of crypto, but a threat. Many blockchains will survive if they upgrade their security. Weak or abandoned projects probably wont survive. The most likely future is not an overnight collapse. It is a long migration where crypto becomes more secure because quantum computing forces it to evolve.
